TEACHING POETRY: PEDAGOGY & BEST PRACTICE
Teaching poetry is my passion. It’s been the area of English that I most look forward to each and every unit and after a decade of practice, I am finally ready to share some of my wisdom with the rest of the world.
THE BOOK
The book is two parts: part pedagogical philosophy and ideas to help you shape your approach to including poetry into the curriculum, and part categorized annotated bibliography. To help you think through poetry as a living component of the curriculum (rather than an isolated, decorative curriculum element), each edition of Teaching Poetry provides multiple categories in which to consider including poems. In the Spring 2020 edition, you will see the following categories & topics:
NOVELS:
Of Mice and Men
The Great Gatsby
The Catcher in the Rye
THEMES:
The Immigrant & Refugee Experience
Exploring Utopia & Dystopia
Social Justice-Seeking Voices
SKILLS:
Using poetry to teach Argument
Using poetry to teach Imagery
Using poetry to teach Metaphor
